Review: Catdaddy Moonshine

Catdaddy Moonshine - CopyCatdaddy Moonshine was introduced in 2005 by the Piedmont Distillers in Madison North Carolina.  They would later launch the Midnight Moon line of moonshine.  It is handcrafted in small batches from corn and triple distilled.  A blend of spices is then infused before bottling at 80 proof.  While the video with Kate Upton dancing to the Rej3ctz Catdaddy single may be quite entertaining, this was done to support the 2012 Daytona 500 race where she was named the Grand Marshall, and not to support the moonshine.  My guess is it still helped Piedmont sell very many bottles of Catdaddy. Review: Ole Smoky Tennessee Blackberry Moonshine

OleSmoky-BlackberryOle Smoky Tennessee Blackberry Moonshine is one of the 40 proof moonshines they create in Gatlinburg Tennessee.  While some may argue as to who makes the best moonshine, there is no argument as to who makes the most moonshine flavors.  Ole Smoky currently list ten 40 proof moonshines, three 80 proof, and five 100+ proof moonshines on their website.  Some of these flavors are limited release and some are only available onsite at their distillery.  Blackberry, Peach, and Apple Pie are their three year round Nationally distributed 40 proof moonshines.  The flavored moonshine starts with their White Lightnin as a base.  This is created with 100% grain neutral spirits that are distilled six times.  Natural flavors are then infused before bottling in mason jars.  Read more »

Review: Full Throttle Blackberry Sloonshine

full throttle blackberry - CopyFull Throttle Blackberry Sloonshine was introduced in 2012.  According to Fortune magazine berries as one category had sales of over 3 billion dollars in the US in 2013.  This makes them the most popular fruit in the US, outselling apples, grapes, banana’s and citrus.  Berries are also a popular flavor ingredient in both vodka and whiskey.  Blackberry is one of the most popular moonshine flavors as Firefly, Ole Smoky, and Midnight Moon also create a blackberry flavored moonshine.  Blackberry Sloonshine is one of five flavors that along with their unflavored Platinum moonshine are distilled with 100% grain neutral spirits in an authentic Old Tom Copper Still.  Natural flavor is added before bottling in a traditional mason jar at 70 proof in Trimbal Tennessee. Review: Midnight Moon Apple Pie Moonshine

midnight moon apple pie - CopyMidnight Moon Apple Pie moonshine is one of six moonshine flavors Piedmont Distillers launched the Midnight Moon line of moonshine with in 2012.  The other flavors include cherry, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, and cranberry.  Their moonshine is based on Junior Johnson’s old family moonshine recipe.  Junior Johnson was a legendary moonshiner with a police record to prove it.  Every batch of Midnight Moon starts with corn and it is triple distilled for smoothness, in small batches.  Their Apple Pie recipe adds apple juice and a cinnamon stick before bottling at 70 proof in Madison North Carolina.  No artificial colors, flavors, or extracts are used. Review: Firefly Apple Pie Moonshine

Review: Ole Smoky Lemon Drop Tennessee Moonshine

Ole smoky lemon drop moonshineOle Smoky Lemon Drop Tennessee Moonshine was introduced October 2013 with their Strawberry Moonshine.  It is one of 13 flavors they create in Gatlinburg Tennessee with neutral spirits as the base.  Natural lemon juice, sugar, and some artificial sweetener is added.  They use a still and a 100 year old family recipe that has been perfected with the help of Dave Pickerell a former master distiller for Makers Mark Bourbon.  Ole Smoky bottles their moonshine at 100, 80, and 40 proof.  While the Lemon Drop was initially produced at 40 proof, Ole Smoky announced in July they would start bottling it at 80 proof as part of their new Lightnin line of moonshine.  While the 40 proof line was designed to attract a larger fan base, current moonshine customers may prefer the heavier alcohol content.  The Lemon Drop reviewed is the original 4o proof, currently still available at most liquor stores.  Read more »
