Review: Vizzy Hard Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Vizzy Hard Seltzer was just released.  This is Molson-Coors second nationally produced hard seltzer.  Henry’s Hard Sparkling Water was their first.  Like most hard seltzers Vizzy is made from a fermented cane sugar base.  What sets Vizzy apart is the addition of acerola cherry, an antioxidant rich super fruit.  Acerola cherry is grown in California, Texas, Florida, Central and South America and contains roughly 30 times more vitamin C per cup than an orange.  Each 12 oz. can of Vizzy contains 18 mg of vitamin C.  That’s 20% of the recommended daily requirement.  Like White Claw, Vizzy contains real fruit juice concentrate in each flavor variety.  Vizzy is available in four flavors including Pineapple Mango, Blueberry Pomegranate, Black Cherry Lime, and Strawberry Kiwi.  It is sold in a 4 flavor 12 can variety pack and individual flavor 6 packs.  So how does it taste?

Vizzy Pineapple Mango: The aroma is an equal blend of pineapple and mango.  Additional time in the glass brings out notes of coconut.  The sweet pineapple entry is joined by mango building to a bright tropical canned pineapple juice with mango peak.  It fades with vanilla buttercream, tangy pineapple and juicy mango.  The finish leaves a long bittersweet pineapple mango aftertaste.

Grade: B

Vizzy Blueberry Pomegranate: The aroma leads with blueberry jam.  Pomegranate juice follows.  The sweet blueberry Pop Tart entry builds to a tart pomegranate juice and sweet blueberry pie filling peak.  It fades with floral notes of blueberry blossom, tangy pomegranate juice, fresh blueberry, and vanilla buttercream.  The long finish leaves bittersweet pomegranate taste softened by sweet blueberry jam and vanilla butter cream.

Grade B

Vizzy Black Cherry Lime: The aroma leads with maraschino cherry.  Additional time in the glass brings out almond and lime.  The cherry Jell-O entry builds to a more natural tart and juicy cherry peak.  It fades with cherry juice, almond, lime sherbet, and vanilla butter cream flavor. The finish is bittersweet with lime peel and tart cherry juice taste softened by butter cream .

Grade: B

Vizzy Strawberry Kiwi: The aroma is frozen strawberry.  Additional time in the glass brings out strawberry jam and kiwi juice.  The freeze dried strawberry entry is joined by kiwi building to a strawberry cotton candy and kiwi juice peak.  It fades with strawberry and vanilla ice cream flavor.  The finish is bittersweet and tart leaving strawberry froyo, grapefruit peel, cherry, and kiwi juice taste.

Grade: B

The Vizzy can reads a hint of flavor, but I find each to be full flavored.  Each of the four Vizzy varieties have two flavors, added fruit concentrate, and dried acerola cherry juice.  This adds up to extra flavor and added sweetness.  I was never a fan of old school flavored seltzer because they did only offer a hint of flavor.  On the hard seltzer flavor and sweetness intensity spectrum, Vizzy has more than White Claw, and Truly.
