Review: Miami Club Rum
Miami Club Rum was originally produced at the first legal distillery in the history of Miami. The distillery opened in 2011 and is located in the heart of Miami’s famous Wynwood Arts District. Production has moved to a larger facility in Miami. Miami Club is made from sugar cane harvested from local fields. A 2/3 molasses, 1/3 cane juice blend is fermented and double distilled using a family recipe dating back to 1911 in Puerto Rico. The rum is slow aged in French Limousine and American White oak for 2 years while it is simultaneously infused with the music of Miami. Salsa, Samba, and other Caribbean rhythms are played to the rum 24-7 through vintage Bose 901 speakers to activate the barrels for a richer deeper flavor yield. A seven step filtration process follows including among other things, coconut shells, and a secret oxygenation technique used to aerate the spirit. Read more

Review: Members Mark Eggnog
Members Mark Eggnog as the name would suggest can be found at Sam’s Club’s. It is sold in a 1.75 liter plastic bottle, and priced at $9.98. At one time Sam’s Club’s also sold a private label Irish Cream liqueur under the O’Dowd’s label. O’Dowd’s Irish Cream and O’Dowd’s Pumpkin Irish Cream, which they also sold, were two of our highest scoring Irish Cream liqueurs. I was a little sad when Sam’s pull the plug on the brand. Members Mark Eggnog is made in Kentucky with Caribbean rum, real cream, cane sugar, and a medley of other classic ingredients. Some adult eggnog’s are made with brandy or bourbon and some have a blend of all three spirits. Read more

Review: Cruzan Coconut Rum
We reviewed Cruzan Coconut Rum several years ago. At that time it was bottled at 55 proof. It is currently sold at 42 proof, so we thought this would be a good time to check out the lower octane Cruzan Coconut. Coconut is one of 16 flavored rums crafted in St. Croix with a rum base made from tropical rainwater and high quality molasses. The spirit is distilled in a 5 column still and aged in oak barrels. The rum is shipped at barrel proof to Florida where it is reduced to proof. Natural flavors are blended before bottling at 42 proof. Read more

Review: Kalani Coconut Liqueur
Kalani Coconut Liqueur is a 100% natural coconut rum liqueur made from fresh coconut milk extracted from a special hybrid of coconut brought over to the Yucatan by Rafael Aristi, nicknamed Malayan Dwarf Coconuts. The fruits of the Yucatan are pollinated by the rare stingless bees, a treasure of the knowledge of Mayan tradition. The Aristi family grows the organic coconuts on their plantation called Oxtapacab in the Yucatan. Oxtapacab was originally a Dutch sisal factory for rope making. The hand picked coconuts are shelled, shredded and pressed to release their milk and pulp, which is then fermented. The fermented coconut milk is macerated with Mexican sugarcane rum and sugar. Kalani is bottled onsite at Casa D’Aristi at 60 proof. Read more
Review: Cruzan Watermelon Rum
Cruzan Watermelon Rum is a Limited Edition release that was announced in July. It has had a very limited presence as we just located a bottle last week. Cruzan currently features 15 flavored rums on their website. Watermelon is not one of them. In 1760 a sugar mill began crushing cane at the site of the Cruzan Rum Distillery on the island of St. Croix. The Nelthropp family built a distillery at the site in the early 1800’s. Today the eighth generation of the family still works at the distillery. Cruzan Watermelon is made from a rum base made from sugar cane molasses and tropical rainwater. The rum is distilled in a five column distillation process and aged in oak barrels. The rum is shipped in bulk at barrel proof to Florida where it is reduced to proof. Natural flavors are blended before bottling at 42 proof. Read more
