Review: Sugar Island Spiced Rum

Sugar Island Spiced Rum - CopySugar Island Spiced Rum was introduced with their Coconut Rum September 2013.  It was created by the Trinchero Family Estates, the family behind over 27 brands of wine, including their first, Sutter Home.  Sugar Island Spiced Rum is made with Caribbean sugar cane rum sourced from the West Indies and Barbados.  Spices, caramel, and natural flavors are blended with the rum in California before bottling at 92 proof. Review: Dry Fly Vodka

Dry Fly Vodka - Copy - CopyDry Fly Vodka was introduced in 2007 along with their gin.  They currently also craft several whiskeys and a bourbon.  The Dry Fly Distillery is owned by Don Poffenroth and Kent Fleischmann two former marketing executives, and fishing buddies.  Dry Fly was the first legal distillery in the state of Washington since prohibition.  Dry Fly vodka is made with Washington soft winter wheat, grown within 20 miles of the distillery.  Once milled the grain is cooked for 5 hours and fermented for 6 days before it is distilled in custom designed Christian Carl pot stills with multiple rectification columns.  These stills were build in Goppingen Germany and they have a small batch capacity of 450 liters.  The vodka is hand bottled and packaged at 80 proof at their distillery in Spokane Washington. Review: Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum - CopyCaptain Morgan Original Spiced Rum was first produced in 1944 by the Seagram Company.  It was introduced in 1984 in the US, and is now owned by Diageo.  Captain Morgan had been produced in Puerto Rico, but it 2012, production was moved to St. Croix.  Captain Morgan is now the number two selling spirit brand in the US, only trailing Diageo stable mate Smirnoff Vodka.  It is made with Caribbean sugar cane molasses, and it is distilled in a continuous still and aged for 1 year in oak barrels.  A Proprietary blend of Caribbean spice is added before bottling at 70 proof.  Read more »

Review: FOS Greek Mastiha Liqueur

FOS Greek Mastiha Liqueur - CopyFOS Greek Mastiha Liqueur is crafted on the small Greek island of Chios with a resin from the Mastiha tree, also known as the crying tree.  This evergreen shrub has a lifespan of over 100 years and is grown and cultivated exclusively on this island.  The Mastiha trees get pricked and delicately sliced at the surface.  It takes several weeks to collect the crying mastiha resin that falls from the openings in the tree.  Once collected the resin is washed with olive oil soap and rainwater, and mixed with fine quality alcohol and put in large bronze tanks and heated carefully by wood fire.  Once distilled it is blended with a proprietary mix of other ingredients.  After inspection and testing it is bottled at 56 proof. Review: 1800 Reposado Tequila

1800 Reposado - Copy1800 Reposado Tequila was introduced in 2004 along with their Silver and Anejo expression.  1800 was named for the year tequila was first aged in oak barrels.  The 1800 product line was first launched in 1975 and it was called Cuervo 1800 Tequila.  It is made with 100% Weber Blue agave that is grown for 8-12 years before they are hand picked.  The pinas are roasted in masonry kilns and double distilled in copper pot stills.  The tequila is then aged in American and French Oak barrels for at least 6 months.
