Review: Woodchuck Spitter Splinter Hard Cider

by Jeff Ellingson

Woodchuck spitter splinter hard ciderWoodchuck Spitter Splinter hard cider was just introduced as part of their limited release Out on a Limb Series of hard cider.  This is the second variety, their first was a chocolate raspberry flavor.  Each of these ciders will be available for 45-60 days.  Spitter Splinter features European bittersweet apple varieties.  The fermented juice from these apples is aged in bourbon barrels for six months.  Woodchuck describes the flavor as dry with woody vanilla oak notes. It pours to a lightly carbonated golden amber color.  The aroma is bitter apple and yeast.  The flavor enters with less bitter than I anticipated, certainly not worth spitting out.  I would describe the flavor as more tart apple.   As the flavor builds I pick up a hint of cinnamon and vanilla at the flavor peak, before a dry bitter oak flavored finish.  My personal taste preference for hard cider leans more toward crisp and tart than dry and bitter, but Woodchuck Spitter Splinter is a well crafted cider that is a nice change of pace.
