Review: Wild Sit Russ Alcoholic Citrus Soda

by Jeff Ellingson

wild-sit-russ-alcoholic-citrus-soda-copyWild Sit Russ Alcoholic Citrus Soda was recently released along with the previously reviewed Wild Alcoholic Rock & Rye Soda by the Wild Ginger Brewing Company.  They join a lineup that already includes Wild Ginger Alcoholic Ginger Beer and Wild Root Alcoholic Root Beer.  Wild Sit Russ is brewed as a premium malt beverage with natural flavors and color added before canning at 4.5% alcohol.

It pours to a florescent Mountain Dew green color.  Blind folded so the color wouldn’t give away the aroma I would describe the flavor as a cross between Mountain Dew and Green River Soda with lime flavor on top of a citrus mix of flavors, with a mild malty beer backing.  The sweet lime entry is joined by grapefruit flavor.  Wild Sit Russ is sweet but not oversweet.  With second and third sips of this hard soda I also pick up a little lemon flavor as it builds to a tart peak.  As the sweetness fades a malty backing arrives before finishing with ginger ale and vanilla, joining the citrus flavor, leaving a saccharine and bittersweet citrus after taste.  Wild Citrus could benefit from a little more effervescence, and while the color and aroma led me to believe this would taste like a hard Mountain Dew, it really didn’t.
