Review: Schlafly Coconut Crème Ale

by Jeff Ellingson

Schlafly Coconut Crème Ale was introduced in April 2017.  It is crafted in St Louis Missouri at the St Louis Brewery.  The St Louis Brewery was built in the former Swift Printing Company Building in 1991.  Coconut Creme Ale is one of eight Seasonal Beers they create.  They also bottle 6 year round and 7 special release beers.  All told they brew over 50 beer styles each year.  About half of them are only available on draft.  Schlafly Coconut Crème Ale is made with Europils Malt, Unmalted Wheat, Flaked Corn, Flaked Oats, and Magnum PL Hops.  It is fermented with coconut puree and pineapples and aged on lightly toasted coconut flakes. It pours to hazy golden color with a fluffy head.  The aroma is wheat ale, and malt, with subtle coconut cream and pineapple.  The sweet ale entry has a foamy mouth feel.  Coconut cream flavor arrives and builds to a tangy pineapple juice peak.  It fades lightly hoped, and finishes with shredded coconut taste.  Schlafly Coconut Crème Ale does not provide the burst of coconut flavor some might expect.  Until the natural shredded coconut finish, I actually taste more pineapple.  That said this is a beer first flavored ale, that I find to be under sold when it is described as a dessert beer.  I limit my desserts to one per day.  Schlafly Coconut Crème Ale is a beer I could drink all evening.
