Review: PomAcai Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

Pomacai vodka - CopyPomAcai vodka was introduced November 2012.  It is the second vodka from Pure Holdings. Their first Purus, was originally owned and developed by Anhueser Busch through their Long Tail Libations subsidiary.  A-B spent two years and millions of dollars developing Purus through a distillery in Northern Italy.  When Inbev acquired A-B they were shut down.  The division was initially acquired by Fire Tail who then sold the business to Pure Holdings two years later.  The first thing they did was to hire two former executives from A-B that were involved with the brand development, packaging and procurement to help run the company. It pours to a Fanta Grape soda color.  The aroma is acai, pomegranate, grape and berry.  The flavor enters as sweetened acai.  Pomegranate joins in before peaking with both tart pomegranate and some bitter acai notes and then fades with chocolate and a mild mouth warming before a slightly peppery finish.  Additional sips bring out more of the chocolate flavor and less of the peppery finish.  Pomacai is a vodka that does not try to bury the acai berry taste, but rather enhances it with pomegranate.  This is smooth enough to drink on the rocks but if you would prefer a cocktail try mixing Pomacai with lemonade, Sprite, or Pom Pomegranate juice.
