Review: Not Your Fathers Root Beer 10.7%

by Jeff Ellingson

Not Your Fathers Root Beer 10.7% - CopyNot Your Father Root Beer 10.7% is one of three hard root beers originally created at the Small Town Brewery in Wauconda Illinois.  The others include a 5.9% and an eye popping 19.5%.  While their 5.9 version is the undisputed king of Hard Root Beer, their 10.7 was introduced a year earlier.  Their 10.7% is currently only available on draft and in 22 oz. bottles.  While the ingredient list is a closely guarded secret, early inteviews claimed cinnamon, wintergreen, anise, Madagascar Vanilla, and Tupulo honey were included. It pours to a dark brown color with a thick fluffy long lasting tan head.  The aroma is wintergreen, sarsaparilla, vanilla, cinnamon, and anise with a molasses and beer backing.  The vanilla and sarsaparilla entry builds to a very sweet and spicy cinnamon and anise peak.  It fades with warm spicy black licorice and wintergreen taste, and finishes with a dry spicy bark flavor, that leaves a long peppery feel, and a burn as I swallow.  I like the overall flavor, but at 10.7% the alcohol taste and feel is a little heavy.  That said, Not Your Father Root Beer may best be served over ice or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
