Review: Malibu Orange Float Rum

by Jeff Ellingson

Malibu orange float rum - CopyMalibu Orange Float rum was introduced in February 2014.  It is one of 14 flavored rums created by Malibu.  It is made with molasses from the finest sugarcane crops and distilled three times in Barbados.  Natural coconut flavored liqueur and orange cream flavors are then blended before bottling at 21% alcohol. In the bottle the aroma is St Josephs children’s aspirin.  Poured in my glass to a liquid orange Jell-O color I also pick up some coconut notes.  The flavor is sugar sweet orange Kool-Aid.  Cream soon joins in producing an orange creamsicle flavor.  As the orange fades I pick up coconut flavor with some mild bitterness and heat from the rum.  Served on the rocks softens the sweetness, bitterness, and heat.

Made in Canada with rum from Barbados

If this was introduced in February of this year , why is it not available anywhere or listed in the product listings for Malibu Rum?? Would be nice to actually find the product!

Malibu like some of the other major distillers release their new products in waves, with some states receiving the product before others. While on a business trip in Missouri I first spotted their Orange Float rum. I decided to wait until I returned home to purchase a bottle. It was not available yet in my home state so I purchased a bottle on my next trip to Missouri 30 days later. It is now featured on the Malibu website so I believe it is avalable throughout the US, but I don’t know about Canada. Another issue is the limited shelf space in liquor stores and liquor departments. This makes it harder for new products to get introduced. I would recommend searching for Malibu Orange Float rum at your nearest major liquor store and if they don’t have it they may order it for you.
