Review: Malibu Black Coconut Rum

by Jeff Ellingson

Malibu Black Coconut Rum - CopyMalibu Black Coconut Rum was released in 2011.  At 70 proof this should not be confused with Malibu Original Coconut Rum which is bottled at 42 proof.  It is one of 14 varieties of rum created by Malibu.  Each flavor starts with molasses from the finest sugar cane crops and pure water.  After fermenting with a proprietary yeast it is distilled 3 times at the West Indies Distillery in Barbados.  The rum is shipped to Canada where coconut liqueur is infused with the rum before bottling at 70 proof. It pours to an iced tea color.  The aroma leads with coconut.  Vanilla and caramel are present as is a rum backing.  The flavor enters with chocolate and coconut cream flavor bringing back memories of Fanny Mae coconut buttercream candy.  At its peak cola flavor with a squeeze of orange arrives and carries through a smooth fade that is followed by warm vanilla frosted coconut cake taste.  Molasses and coconut flavor follow on a semidry bitter finish that stings but is absent any rum burn.
