Review: Cabo Wabo Diablo

by Jeff Ellingson

Cabo Wabo DiabloCabo Wabo Diablo was introduced in September 2013 in select markets.  It is made is Mexico at 35% alcohol with the highest quality Arabica beans and Cabo Wabo Blanco tequila.  Cabo Wabo tequila was born in 1996 as Sammy Hagar was searching for a tequila exceptional enough to serve inside his cantina in Cabo San Lucas.  Instead he decided to create his own.  Cabo Wabo Diablo is bottled in the same trademark bottle as their tequila and features a color changing label with a devilish surprise appearing only when the bottle is chilled. In the bottle the aroma is fresh roasted coffee.  Poured in my glass to a black coffee color I pick up some chocolate notes.  In my mouth there is none of the syrupy feel I get with the other coffee liqueurs.  Of the three products sampled this is the thinnest and driest.  The flavor starts out with dark chocolate.  The battle is joined by the flavor of Arabica bean coffee and the heat and sweet agave flavor of the tequila.  As the heat fades I pick up more of the coffee finish.  Additional sips bring out more of a cocoa entry and agave transition between coffee and heat.  Cabo Wabo Diablo may have a little more tequila punch to it than the others, but give it time and it may become your favorite.
